Within years, Tik Tok has gained a lot of popularity. It is now included in the list of top 10 social platforms, with more than 800 million active users. But, since its arrival the application has been surrounded by controversies, leading it to get banned in many countries. Let’s discuss some of the places where Tik Tok is banned.
The First Country To Ban TikTok
Imposing a ban in 2018, Indonesia became the first country to boycott this application. The government held it responsible for promoting pornography and blasphemy. Indonesia being a home for the most significant Muslim population, saw the app disrespecting their religion.
The ban was lifted almost a week later when the Tik Tok owners promised to appoint 20 staff members for censoring content in Indonesia. The letter issued to the Indonesian government also stated that the company would increase its security settings and restrict the usage of underage users.
Banned For US Agencies
In January 2019, the USA imposed a ban on this top-rated app. The country did not impose a complete ban, but for some of the US agencies. People working under the USA navy, airforce, army, coast guard and other government officials were directed strictly to not download this application on their government-issued devices.
The information being sensitive and risky, Senator Josh Hawley introduced a bill banning the download of Tik Tok on government-owned devices. Later, legislation was issued prohibiting the use of Tik Tok by federal employees on any device.
Bangladesh Bans Too
Bangladesh is also included in the list of countries who boycotted this app. In 2018, the country accused Tik Tok of sharing pornographic videos. Besides this, the Bangladeshi government charged them with promoting gambling through videos. The internet access of the application was instantly blocked.
India Bans Tik Tok In Some Parts But Lifts It After A Few Days
After a ban in the neighbouring country, India has also prohibited the use of Tik Tok. In April 2019, the Madras High court in India banned the app for showing sexually explicit content and having the potential to be used by paedophiles and other sexual predators.
Seeing that this can lead to more sexual abuse and rape cases, the court issued a notice for its banning. Later, Google Play Store and App store removed the app. With over 100 million users from India, the company faced a huge loss.
Since the court did not want to reconsider the ban, the company removed more than 6 million videos that violated the content guidelines. Twenty-two days later, the ban was lifted after a plea from Bytedance. A lot of netizens in India are still filing a petition for blocking this application.
In short, Tik Tok has been subject to a lot of controversies. Countries have either banned its use or are working on it. The only way that Tik Tok can stop getting involved in any disputes in future is by strictly monitoring the shared content.
Making their application a safe place for youngsters as well as adults, Tik Tok can become a more successful social platform.
